We worked on techniques for anyone that was interested, (such as the hand roll) as well as just messing around (kayak water polo anyone?). Depending on the lifeguards call, we'd also practice drops at the end of the sessions. He'd had the technique down the session before, but just had no luck that day. I was super impressed that he didn't bail, most people can only get 2 tries in before they run out of air. If you want to learn the hand roll, I'd suggest starting out with the basic eskimo roll and combat roll using paddles. It will help you figure out your balance. Once you get the basics down, using a kickboard first then moving up to a Frisbee can really help you with your hand rolls.
