Just thought that I would share a few tips for those who are planning to do a controller upgrade on their K40. These are general tips, not specific to any specific controller.

1. Plan out the upgrade - create a list of all the required parts, and break down the upgrade into simple and testable steps. This is the most important part of the upgrade process. Poor planning, or trying to do too much at once usually leads to errors and frustration.

2. Keep the wiring neat - color coded and neatly run wiring can make troubleshooting problems much easier - if it looks like a rats nest, it will be difficult to track down problems.

3. Document the upgrade as you go along. By doing this, you can undo changes much easier if necessary, especially when it comes to firmware or software issues, and will also make life easier if you decide to upgrade a second machine.

4. Take pictures and document the original configuration. That way you can always put it back to stock if necessary. Nothing worse than having one or two critical connections that you can not figure out.

5. Take your time, rushing will only increase the chance of error.

6. Use a static ground strap. The chance of destroying a component from static is a distinct possibility. It does not happen often, but it is a case of better safe than sorry, and ground straps are very inexpensive.

7. If you are unsure of how to do something, reach out to the group for help, there are some pretty smart people who are always willing to help.

8. Double check all connections before powering the machine on, especially the AC connections and the high voltage output to the tube. I recommend always using a GFCI outlet, and make sure all tools are out of the machine, and all components are secured to the case properly.

I hope these tips help, if you have any questions, please feel free to comment or contact me.

TR8*2 leadscrews, yes. They are on the Z axis of one of my printers.
Ball screws, no. I've been warned by others to pay more and get them from a seller that explicitly advertises end machining as included in that price. Will see. I got a 3040 so I don't need ballscrews at the moment. You should also look at "RDB Bearing"... for shafts, bearings, and blocks. They cut to length, just send a message.

Windows Notepad is great for cleaning files before pasting into Notepad++. And after that I have no issues editing and saving files in N++.

Do you know UX, GUI design, web design, all that stuff ?
If you've ever wanted to help with Smoothie stuff, we have dire need of your craft, so now's the time !

We are creating a new web interface for Smoothie. Its a huge, very ambitious projet. It's intended to make use of the machine much simpler, and to have a ton of features. It'd run on your computer, like classical hosts, or on a tablet fixed to the machine, that'd replace the current LCD screens everybody uses.

You can find the project here : https://github.com/arthurwolf/fabrica
There is even a demo here : http://arthurwolf.github.io/fabrica/ ( requires an active Smoothieboard on your network ).

We already have folks helping with coding, and documentation writing. But just because you know how to code a web interface doesn't mean you know how to make it pleasant to the user, or nice looking.

There are folks around who have learned how to make interfaces great, and if you are one of those persons, we definitely want your help.
We need help re-designing the currently existing ( few ) screens we have so they are nicer, as well as designing all the new screens we'll need in the future.

We also need icons and graphics if that's your thing.

If you are interested in helping, please contact me at wolf.arthur@gmail.com so we can chat.

Cheers !

Bellow, an example of a screen I've done. As you can see, lots of room for improvement. Please help !

Just got a notification that I have a parcel at my U.S. drop warehouse from Cape Electric Supply. Have no idea who they are or what they have sent. You never know, it might be something cool, but I'll have to wait a while before I can get there to pick it up and solve the mystery.

SO I did some math and figured out that it now takes 10,220 pills a year to keep me somewhat healthy. Now at 1 calorie per pill, I am getting an extra 5 days of food a year. I figure that's why I can't lose weight...lol!

I'm sorry to hear that Anthony but you seem to keep busy none the less. I turn 66 this year and feel blessed so far. My twin brother died 2 years ago. That's why I named myself Allready Gone . I figured since we were identical I wouldn't be far behind. I was very athletic all american ect. Still look trim but I like beer and cigarettes too much.

Well it is about time I clean up my electronics fab room. It has gotten out of hand, can't find anything when I need it. Probablly going to take at least 4-6 hours to get it all organized again.

+Anthony Bolgar Could you maybe print me some captive nut style gears for my Z table? They need to grip a 10mm threaded rod and be driven by a belt so all four corners turn at the same time. I can pay for shipping and cost of materials.

Thanks in advance

I am currently developing a glossary for one of the projects +Arthur Wolf is developing. It deals with configuring 3D printers/CNC machines/and Laser cutters. I would appreciate it if people could list terms that they feel would benefit by being in the glossary. I have got a good headstart on the project, but I know I am missing a lot of terms.

If anybody is in need of a stock K40 head, I have 2 available. One has the mirror and lens, the other only the mirror. I am asking $350 for the complete one, and $20 for the one without the lens. Neither unit has air assist, but I can provide 3D printed air assist nozzles at no extra charge. These came out of lasers that I upgraded. They had very little use.
