As we carry ever increasing amounts of data with us, we need the ability to quickly and securely transfer it from one device to another. While wireless connectivity provides convenience, USB ensures reliable and fast data transfer.
USB Type-C gives designers flexibility and simplicity. It will support USB 3.1 at a top speed of up to 10 Gbps, offering faster data transfer, video and secure connectivity over a single solution.
USB Type-C enables
- Signal transmission at ultra high speed to support growing data, video content and power delivery
Smaller, neat form factor design drives the connector to carry multiple signals for data, video and power delivery. Together with these capabilities comes easier design and usability. No more frustration from wrongly guessing which way to plug the connector in because the fully reversible plug orientation and cable direction makes Type-C a far more convenient interface solution for consumers.
The new USB Type-C connector – at a size of 8.3mm x 2.5mm – makes SuperSpeed USB highly attractive for portable and wearable devices. Though slightly larger than the current Micro USB, the Type-C connector also supports faster charging. This makes it compatible not only for small mobile devices but larger devices.
USB Type-C enables
- The connector to carry multiple signals for data, video and power delivery in a small form factor
- Fully reversible plug orientation and cable direction
- Data, video and power over a single connector
Whatever your system design is, power control and protection will always feature prominently in its reliability. The USB power delivery (PD) architecture is excellent for end-to-end power support, and provides quick charging possibilities through a device's USB port.
USB PD extends beyond USB BC to allow up to 100 W charging, power support and role swap for system power optimization. The connector offers from 5.0 V at 2.0 A for handhelds and wearables and up to 20 V at 5.0 A for ultrabooks. Future scalability ensures changing USB performance requirements can be met.
USB Type-C enables
- Fast charging
- Multiple output voltages as defined in the USB PD standard
- Support of international energy regulations like Energy Star
- USB performance scalability
Authentication can be used to verify that connected devices are what they claim to be, preventing counterfeit accessories and increasing safety and trust between host and device. Effectively the authentication results can set a 'trust level'.
Using this, system and device manufacturers can create policies to enable or disable certain capabilities. For example, a system might authenticate a charger or cable before enabling high powered fast charging, preventing safety issues that can be caused by counterfeit products. A system might ask a user to confirm the capabilities of a newly connected, untrusted device before enabling capabilities that could potentially harm the system or even compromise network security.
